The South African Judicial Education Institute (SAJEI) has invited interested candidates to apply for its Aspirant Judges Programme to take place in Gauteng from 18 to 20 July 2018.

The programme is aimed at increasing and merging, in a methodical manner, the knowledge, skills and values that are required of judicial officers. This is achieved through the expert input of Judges, ensuring an understanding of judicial culture. The course does not guarantee appointment to the Judiciary.


Application deadline is 16 January 2018.

Selection criteria

Selection criteria include the following:

  • The applicant must be a fit and proper person.
  • Minimum period of 12 years’ experience as an attorney, advocate, a judicial officer (including acting appointments) or legal academic and any other relevant capacity.
  • Attorneys and Advocates must have experience of practicing law, particularly in the High Court.
  • Academics must have published widely in accredited law journals.
  • Certificate of good standing from statutory bodies and recognized Bar Associations. Magistrates must submit letters of good standing from the Magistrates Commission as well as a recommendation from Head of Court based on judicial performance.
  • Academic qualifications: a law degree recognized in South Africa.
  • Evidence of commitment to the transformation of the legal system in promoting the values set out in section 1 of the Constitution.

The Selection Committee will also consider the following:

  • Race and gender.
  • Age.
  • Previously disadvantaged individuals.
  • Disability
